4 Things I Learned From My 1st Month Blogging

I almost cannot believe it’s been nearly 6 weeks since I launched Sunday Smitten. It definitely does not feel like it was that long ago. My first month blogging has for sure been a crazy experience and I’ve learned so much already. I know I have such a long road ahead of me as I build my little place on the internet but I’m definitely super excited to see where Sunday Smitten is in 6 months or a year’s time. It’s a little daunting to think about to be honest. I thought I’d write a little post about what I’ve learned during my first month blogging.

An Editorial Calendar Discovery

If there’s one thing I’ve found this past month its that I need an Editorial Calendar. Or at the very least I need some kind of plan for the upcoming week/s/month. I may have a general idea of the kind of content I want to focus on for the upcoming month but having it all written down so I can refer to it has been beyond helpful. I personally just use an Excel spreadsheet detailing the day, idea, category, tags, images and the status of the post. I’ve only just implemented an Editorial Calendar so I cannot speak on its effectiveness long term but so far I don’t think I’ll be able to keep Sunday Smitten updated without it.

Sometimes Less Is More

This specifically relates to the design/look of Sunday Smitten. This blog has gone through 3 different themes and many different looks the past 5 or so weeks. I am such a perfectionist that I for sure struggle when something just isn’t quite right. And having to look at Sunday Smitten every day it bugged me when the look wasn’t quite how I wanted it to look. It took me weeks to find the right theme, colour scheme, design and look that I wanted all along. It also took me 5 weeks to realise that sometimes less is more. I realised that no sidebar and fewer ads gave my content a greater feature and let’s be honest, the content is why you’re here.

The Daunting World Of Social Media

If there’s one thing I’ve struggled with majorly during my first month blogging its the social media aspect. Having to keep Sunday Smitten updated with regular content and be present on 4+ social media platforms is incredibly overwhelming. Especially considering I’ve barely used social media in years, save Instagram for my small business. I have come to realise that perhaps it’s better to just focus on 1 platform but am still undecided on which would be best for Sunday Smitten. I really need to work on my social media strategy and get some kind of plan in place. This is definitely something I need to work on in the coming months.

Narrowing My Niche

I’ve come a long way in the past almost 6 weeks when it comes to the content/niche of Sunday Smitten. All those weeks ago I was sure I could create content covering numerous niche’s on such a regular basis that I could grow a blog that focused on Fashion, Beauty, Life, Blogging, Health, Fitness and a few others. But I now see how unrealistic that plan was. Just as ‘less is more’ when it comes to the look of Sunday Smitten, sometimes less is more when it comes to content creation. I’ve completely narrowed down the type of content I want to create in the future to just 4 different categories. Though there may be different kinds of subcategories I’ve got a much clearer vision of the kind of content I want to focus on for the future.
